The word ‘Yogi’ refers to someone who practices the art of yoga. All adherents of yoga are known as Yogi.  Yoga is a practice of Hindu aimed at self-promoting the body and mind. It also focuses on training human consciousness in spiritual insight and tranquility.

The fact that yoga is a Hinduism practice does not limit the Hindus alone to be Yogi. Devoting yourself to the practice and exercise of yoga can make you a Yogi, beyond the ethnicity, religion, and tradition. There are certain lifestyles and qualities exhibited by the Yogis.

What Does It Take To Be Yogi?

The lifestyles of Yogis transcend a belief system or rule. Yogi isn’t about sitting down in a cross-legged position with your eyes closed. It is never about losing weight, exercising your body, or getting healthy.

  • Absence of conceit
  • Absence of greed

All of the above are the essential qualities of a Yogi, according to Baghavad Gita of Krishna. The ability to adopt all these with the yoga practices makes you a true Yogi.

How To Become A Self-Taught Yogi?

Yoga is not peculiar to Hinduism alone. Anyone can practice yoga and become a yogi. Interestingly, yoga can be self-taught with the supervision of a teacher. The following are steps to follow in becoming a self-taught Yogi:

  • Make Adequate Research On Yoga Practice

Ensure you gather adequate knowledge on what you’re about to start. Read enough books on yogi philosophy, do research online, watch yoga videos, and learn how your posture affects your body and mind.

  • Set Your Goals And Schedules

There is a need to set your goals and schedule to be useful in your practice. Decide on what to do and allot time to each. It will help you checkmate if you are meeting up or lagging in your practice.

  • Discuss With Your Instructor

Before you start self-practice, ensure your teacher is aware. It will enable him to guide you on what to do and some necessary things to take note of. Also, your instructor might help you on how to set yourself straight during some poses.

  • Watch Your Breath And Always Close Your Eyes

During practice, be aware of your breath. Employ mindful breathing by watching your inhale and exhale. Closing your eyes is also necessary as it helps you to be aware of how your body is moving through space. It will also help you in checking in with your breath.

  • Equip Your Focus

It is necessary if you are going to achieve the aim of yoga. Don’t be mindful of things around you during practice. Avoid the use of technology and any materials that can be of distraction.


Becoming a Yogi is only achievable when there are dedication and the right focus. However demanding it may look, it comes with a lot of benefits. It helps build the body system through the right exercise and also trains the mind to be active.
